Abstract

Cultural identity, intelligence, and self -esteem were examined in a proposed model of academic success among 53 First Nation adolescents from northern Quebec. Intelligence and cultural identity uniquely affected academic success, whereas self-esteem was not associated with academic success. The findings support the growing literature on cultural identity as a protective factor to academic outcomes and the well-being of First Nations
students, and point towards the importance of culturally compatible programs for First Nations students.
